The IRS and the Case of the Missing $7000

A couple years ago I got a letter from the IRS claiming that I owed the U.S. Government about $7000.

Okay, that got my head spinning. $7000 is a lot of money, and I certainly did have that kind of scratch budgeted for the IRS.

I immediately got in contact with a recommended tax accountant. Within 5 minutes he was able to look over the papers and determine that not only did I NOT owe the IRS $7000, the IRS probably owed me a little bit of money.

A week or so later, it was official. I had evidently filled out one of those tax software programs incorrectly (I now only use tax accounting services), and due to the error the IRS owed me just enough to pay for the tax accountant's services, and maybe a tiny bit extra.

The point here is that it took the tax accountant all of 5 minutes to understand the situation. Why didn't the IRS do that? They wanted to flat-out steal my money - money that they categorically did not deserve. I find that troubling, and so should you. There was nothing unique about my situation. If it happened to me, it could happen to you.
